Tomorrow (May 26th) is the first day of games in the Thunderbird Summer League. This time is always very exciting to see teams already with aspirations of a long run into playoffs and new studs coming onto the varsity scene. It also thankfully, allows some coaches to get an idea of what they MAY see from opposing teams... Varsity games every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday Junior Varsity/ Freshman games every Wednesday and Friday Here are tomorrow's varsity games and their times... 300 Goldwater vs. Greenway 400 Goldwater vs. Moon Valley 500 Cortez vs. Paradise Valley (A) 600 Paradise Valley (B) vs. Scottsdale Christian 700 Liberty vs. Washington 800 Boulder Creek vs. Mountain Ridge 900 OConnor vs. Peoria HSDickieV

I recognized half a dozen DIII, NAIA and JC coaches, and The Legend recognized 10 or so more. I said in a post a year or two ago that the UPG tourney was getting to be fairly well attended by small college coaches. In the past, they've basically just hung out out at Vanguard. This year there were coaches at Mater Dei ( note to a certain AZ parent: It's not pronounced "Maitre'd") and University High Schools as well. Three of the coaches with whom I spoke said they usually made it a point to check out the Arizona clubs at this tourney.

I am assuming we are talking about our 6'1" ish blonde (Matthews)? She has a nack of knowing where missed shots are going to end up and has a very quick and strong first jump. She is saw raw and really has no moves around the basket, but we are working on that with her. Can you believe last year as a freshman it was her first year even playing in the post? She was her teams point guard in Junior High. Thank you very much for the kind words about our girls... HSDickieV

Posts: 58 (05/27/09 02:41) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Not much to report after Day 1, it went as most would have guessed... tired legs, ragged execution, and many fouls. That however is a thing of beauty in the eyes of many coaches because it symbolizes basketball is back and this years "clay" needs plenty of molding. Almost every game came down to the wire last night, including what for me was the most impressive outcome of the night, which was a Liberty win over a tough, athletic Washington team. Granted its summer ball, but we play these games for a reason which means their has to be some worth in these games. Nice to see all the coaches, old players, new players, "old parents", and new parents back in the gym again! HSDickieV

Shadow Mountain only had 4 players, and borrowed a few from Liberty. They took Tolleson down to the wire, losing only in the last seconds. Next up was Tolleson vs Apollo. Wow! Again down to the wire. Each team scored 4 times in the last 1:01. Think about that. Finally Tolleson scores with 3.8 seconds left, and Apollo almost scored again - which would have meant 9 baskets in a minute - but Tolleson pulls it out. And for today's dose of hyperbole...the state's most exciting player doesn't play for the Warriors or the Thunder or the Elite or the Swish or the Phenoms. I "Promise" that if you watch her play, you'll agree. For you old timers....who were the state's fastest, quickest players? Dymond? Yovanna? This kid is faster. Wish I would have stayed for the third game which was the Tolleson/Apollo game. I saw one of the players warming up for Apollo and I assume that this is who you are talking about. I was wondering if this was D White's younger sister. Who is the kid?

The discussion among the coaches was who they would choose in front of her if they were choosing a team and could pick from anyone in the state. A couple coaches would start their team with a post, but there was no consensus on any kid in the state who is better. Apollo kids don't get the same publicity as, say, Highland players, and Venom coaches apparently don't feel the need to keep braying to the world how awesome their players are. There are parts of her game that need to be strengthened, but she's only a sophomore. A really really fast sophomore. Interestingly, she may not even play hoops in college. She's one of the best sprinters in the Southwest at her age group, and she has Olympian bloodlines.

Pinnacle scores 10 points in the last minute to force the OT. Tonight's top game should be Valley Vista vs Pinnacle at 9PM.

Tolleson over Pinnacle 73-63 (that was with a running clock!). Tolleson was missing their point guard, and Pinnacle was missing their post. In an earlier game, Baby Swish (more or less...i.e., Pinnacle #2) beat North by about 10.
